Synopsis
Magna Mundi is a game of grand strategy where you play as the alter
ego of a country picked from a pool of more than 400 nations in a world
with starting conditions as close as possible to the historical
situation at the chosen date.
You can pick any day from any year, from May 29th 1453 up to June
18th 1815 and rest assured that you will experience an accurate depiction of the political, social and military aspects involved in governing a nation of this period.
Through the simulation of historical processes, Magna Mundi presents a
revolutionary concept never seen in a strategy game before. The result
is a world where change flow freely within the constraints faced
historically, generating a dynamic that leads to the creation of
plausible alternate realities.
Experience the historical processes that shaped the present era,
starting with the Fall of Byzantium, passing through the Discoveries
period of the Atlantic nations, the Holy Roman Empire politics, the
Barbary Pirates terrorizing the Mediterranean, the Japanese Sengoku in
the far east, the Horse Nomad tribes of central Asia, the struggle for
power in India, the Religious clashes, Colonialism and slavery, the
Revolutionary age or the American struggle for independence, among many
others…
Our goal is to give you, the person behind the curtain, the tools to
pursue your objectives with myriads of different strategies and immerse
you in a new reality. Your challenge is to make the right calls and
decades, if not centuries later, look back and be proud of the decisions
that shaped your nation's destiny.
.
A World Encompassing Experience
Magna Mundi scope is the entire world.
This means each geographical
region will display its own idiosyncrasies tied to cultures, religions,
knowledge, among other factors. The Holy Roman Empire, Nomads and Tribal
countries, Tributary System or Sengoku are just some of the
implementations seamlessly integrated into the game interface, supported by
complex dynamic events that write a different narrative everytime you
play.
Attend the Reichtag voting with all members properly assembled, check the loyalty of local warlords and order border raids on your neighbours, maneuver yourself to claim the throne of Japan, feel the diplomatic pressure of dealing with the Middle Kingdom when it casts a shadow over your country, experience the chaotic nature of the small Indian countries and much, much, much more...
Live History in the making and if you are good enough, leave your
signature on it!
.
Land Warfare
Land warfare is much more than recruiting some troops and throwing them into the next enemy province without too much thought, other than the numbers involved.
Battles will rage across the provinces in different modes. Upon entering, the provincial battle starts in a scouting mode, where troops from both sides try to gain an advantage over the opposition. This mode eventually gives way to skirmishing and then even into a single decisive battle. How this happens depends on many factors that include the personality of the commanders, the terrain or the majority of eight different troop types involved.
Weather also plays an important role on the fortunes of war. Don't get caught marching throughout Severe Winter. Your troops may not see the next Spring...
With eight troop types, there are many different strategies to follow: Do you want to rely on maneuvering and skirmishers - less vulnerable to the threats of attrition but also less effective if called upon a decisive battle - or are you going to rely on more expensive heavy troops that can bring a decisive action to a close in good terms for you? Do you have the leadership suited for one type of combat or the other? Is it better to follow a middle route? How about paying for mercenaries to shed the blood you need to pay as the price of your ambition? The choice is yours!
.
Naval Warfare
Naval power and the concept of power projection were brought to the forefront of military strategy during the period of the game. As such, one can expect Magna Mundi to abstract its importance in the game.
To become a naval power, one needs more than money to build ships. One needs the relevant infrastructure. One needs both proper leadership and the proper dedication in policies and in many decisions. Decisions that carry consequences. Not all of them good.
Money will not solve everything. A fleet of ranked ships is certainly a mighty force to behold but without the patrolling of pickets can be nothing more than an expensive and vulnerable liability... or without a proper Admiral in command. After all, what can someone do with an Admiral that is technically skilled but is a coward nonetheless? Or a high ranked incompetent that enjoys his position through the influence of birthrights?
Ports will play an important role, admirals will be tested differently under different conditions and knowledge of new technologies can provide an edge. Even amphibious operations are complex affairs that may end up in disaster if poorly planned and before a single soldier sets foot in enemy land.
.
Religious System
Magna Mundi will have a complex religious system that depicts the
dynamics of religion in the timeframe of the game.
Each province can have several religions picked from more than 70 to cover the whole world.
Conversion of provinces is a gradual process that
requires repeated attempts without success being guaranteed. Religious homogeneity may be desirable, but will prove to be an elusive aim in many circumstances.
There is also a significant role
for the Defender of the Faith and for each religion alongside dozens of religious
decisions and laws for each. Religious migrations, prosecuting of religious minorities and their
dynamics of growth are also included in Magna Mundi.
.
Colonial System
A complex but intuitive colonial system will be present in Magna Mundi.
The player will be able to define colonial policies toward natives, ranging from benevolent integration, to the callous, racist policies of fear and enslavement.
Colonies can also have specializations, helping them to have a single place within the player’s colonial empire.
Natives come to life with their own interests and behaviours and will play a significant role in how the colonies develop being a presence throughout the game. Later on, emigration will also play a significant role. Expect to see migration from Europe to the colonies once cities are large enough. This in turn will lead to unique narratives, ever different but plausible, where religion and politics come into play.
Colonies will also develop colonial cultures that reflect their origins in the Old World but also their experiences in the New. In the late game, given the right conditions, players will experience dynamic colonial independence movements and must pick the best strategy to deal with them.
.
National Ethos
In Magna Mundi each country posseses some intangible attributes that makes it unique. To the collection of such traits, we call it the National Ethos.
At start, the country comes already with some National Ethos picked, based on historical factors and detailed research. This provides a good framework for the player to see what are the stregths of his country and from then on, decide what he will make of it.
As one can expect from such powerful forces, however intangible, they present very significant advantages in some areas and reneging them and the gifts of the ancestors to pursue a new path is everything but simple. But it can be done, in the knowledge that a period of strife, lasting probably some decades will befall one's country.
While acting as anchors and references to help define and differentiate each country, National Ethos also provide a good narrative element as their impact in almost all areas of the game is assured and the events that will tell the ever different story will depend significantly on it.
.
Economic System
In the economic sphere, the trade system is challenging and plausible. No country can aspire to control every center of trade in the world. As was the case in reality, there are limits to what the player can achieve, increasing the importance to strategize one's trade. Small traders can be content by focusing their efforts in single spots and turn a profit, but to be a trade mogul, one needs much more than a fleet of merchant ships and some chests of gold. One needs diplomacy, one needs political acumen, one needs to back his words with weapons, if needs be.
Trade goods are aplenty. With more than 50 and different effects associated to each other, Magna Mundi offers variety and a host of different effects tied to each trade good. Prices for these goods depend on the actual geopolitical conditions, while many elements can cause price fluctuations at once or over time. Wars, specific provincial buildings even the number of countries, all influence the price of a certain trade good. Expect luxury prices to fall dramatically during periods of war and strife while the price of basic goods skyrockets under the same conditions.
With the influx of colonial goods and the ever more complex nature of trade in the era, all advanced nations experienced some inflation; to reflect this, inflation is a factor the player can use to help the country, but relying on minting too much will turn inflation harder and harder to control as the economy gets used to it.
